The VIII Festival of the cinema of the countries-members of the European Union was open on 19 October in Kaliningrad. A Bulgarian director participated in the festival program for the first time. Vladislav Karamfilov - Vargala presented to the audience in Kaliningrad its production - the comedy "Operation Shmenti-Kapeli" with the support of Bulgarian Cultural Institute.

In April this year "Shmenti-Kapeli" was shown twice in front of the Russian audience in Moscow : in "Hudozhestveniy" movie theatre in the frames of the 14th International Detective Films Festival - Detective FEST and on television in the detective program. There was also a screening in the hall of BCI in front of fans of Bulgarian cinema. And on 23 October the audience in Kaliningrad also had the chance to see "Operation Shmenti-Kapeli".

In Kaliningrad Vladi Vargala - author of one of the best modern Bulgarian films presented his film and had a meeting with viewers and journalists as well as had a talk with the management of the festival and namely with Artem Rishkov. Later Vladi made a sightseeing tour in this extraordinary town.

The director was truly worried before the screening : will the audience understand his sense of humor, will they manage to feel the story, which will be developed on the screen. It became clear that he was worried in vain : either the most benevolent audience in Kaliningrad gathered in the big hall of ‘Zaria" movie theatre or "Shmenti-Kapeli" was really well-understood for the Russians without the need of long explanations. The film was really interesting for the audience. After the screening they have been asking questions for more than two hours. And what is important is that not only journalists from Kaliningrad asked questions but ordinary people as well. And they asked questions of different matter.

For the representatives of Kaliningrad the fact that there are so many common characteristics in the life of modern Bulgarian and modern Russia and that we react to the problems existing in such a similar way and save ourselves with humor was a real discovery.

The festival of the cinema in the countries of the European Union is not a competition. The aim is to show the best European films. The most famous for 2012 festival hit, the film awarded the "Golden Palm" Grand Prix at the festival in Cannes - the French movie "Amour" became the discovery of the festival.

In this year's program of the Kaliningrad event there was a Week of French cinema. Which country would become "the chief one" in 2013 is still unclear. It could be Bulgaria. Negotiations are now in process.

Concerning "Operation Shmenti-Kapeli" the Russian audience will have another chance to see the film. Weeks of Bulgarian cinema will be organized in Moscow and Saint Petersburg in the frames of the program of the Days of Bulgarian spiritual culture in Russia. The screening in Moscow is scheduled for 21 November at 18.30 in "Rolan" movie theatre, Chistoprudniy Bld. In Saint Petersburg the screening is scheduled for 23 November at 18.00 in "PIK" movie theatre, 2 "Efimova" St.
