"...He who falls while fighting to be free
can never die: for him the sky and earth,
the trees and beasts shall keen,
to him the minstrel's song shall rise...

...By day he's shaded by an eagle,
a wolf licks gently at his wounds,
above, a falcon - bird of rebels -
tends to this rebel as a brother would...

...The moon comes out and day grows dim,
on heaven's vault the stars now throng,
the forest rustles, quiet stirs the wind,
the mountains sing an outlaw song..."

2nd June is the Day of Hristo Botev and those who have died for Bulgaria's freedom.

Hristo Botev was a Bulgarian poet and national revolutionary. With his life and work, with its revolutionary activity Botev gave a shining example of unity in word and deed. Botev is widely considered by Bulgarians to be a symbolic historical figure and national hero. After the start of the April Uprising, which had the goal to liberate Bulgaria and is considered the apogee of the fight for independence, Botev began organising a troupe to enter Bulgaria and help the rebels. Botev and part of the troupe boarded the "Radezki" ship in Gurgevo (Romania) on May 30, 1876. From the ship Botev sent articles describing the grave situation of the Bulgarian people to several foreign publications as well as his famous goodbye letter to his family. The troupe convinced the German captain to let them leave the ship at the Bulgarian port of Kozlodui and started moving in the direction of the Balkan Mountains where most of the battles of the April Uprising were taking place. On June 2 Botev's troupe engaged in its heaviest fight with the Turkish army.

Botev was hit by bullet and died at the foot of the peack "Vola" in the Balkan, near the town of Vratza. June 2 has been officially declared as the Day of Botev and of Those Who Have Perished in the Fight for Bulgaria's Independence On June 2 sirens sound at noon as Bulgaria honours one of its most beloved heroes and revolutionaries, the poet and rebel Hristo Botev. The sirens are a call to remember the day on which Botev died after several days of fighting against the Ottoman army in the days when Bulgaria was under Ottoman rule.
